Airframe Maintenance Technician
You can prepare for a career in the exciting field of aircraft repair as an
Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) in Airframe maintenance by earning a
certificate of achievement or an associate in science degree at Solano
Community College. In addition upon completion of the required curriculum
you will receive a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificate of
Authorization to test.
You will start the Airframe curriculum with the operation, repair, service,
and testing of all aircraft systems: hydraulic brakes, landing gear, flap
systems, pneumatic and fuel systems, cabin air conditioning and
pressurization, general airframe assembly and rigging procedures.
You will then have airframe laboratory projects in repair techniques on
wood, fabric, metal structural components and metal fabrication and repair.
You will also examine the process for refinishing, fiberglass, honeycomb and
composite structures. The AMT General I & II courses will cover basic
theories and laboratory practices. The curriculum will include the study of
flight, aircraft materials, and construction; practice mechanical drawing
and blueprint reading. The general curriculum will also include pertinent
FAA regulations; ethics, responsibilities and safety all which will help
provide you with the well rounded education and experience you will need to
start your new career.
An ever increasing number of new light and medium aircraft are in the sky
each year, and a number of new airports are being built by government
agencies throughout the country. Thus, there is a pressing demand for
qualified aircraft mechanics. Positions may be found with metropolitan areas
and rural airports, with government agencies, and with private firms or
contractors. Aviation Maintenance Technicians should be able to adapt easily
to new developments in their field. Preparation in high school should
include courses in algebra, geometry, and shop. Working conditions are
clean, well lighted, and attractive.

Airframe or Powerplant (A&P) Certificate:
After the completion of the AMT General courses and the Airframe or
Powerplant curriculum you will receive your Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) Certificate of Authorization to test your Federal A&P License.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires 1900 hours to complete
Airframe, Powerplant and General curriculum. For example: Four full
semesters of instruction to complete the General and Airframe curriculum
(1150 hrs.) and test for your first license; then complete 2 additional
semesters of instruction to finish the alternate rating (750 hrs.) and test
for your second license.
To achieve the
Associate in Science Degree Completion of 62 units required for the
major, and general education requirements. Degrees can be obtained upon
completion of the units required for the major in either Airframe or
Powerplant and general education requirements.
Certificate of Achievement Completion of the 41 unit major.
Avionics Technician
You can prepare for a career in the exciting field of avionics by earning a
certificate of achievement or an Associate in Science Degree at Solano
Community College. This program will prepare you to work as a technician on
the avionics field, skilled in the installation, troubleshooting, removal,
and replace of all cockpit instruments which include airborne
communications, navigation, and identification systems. You will also learn
about the automatic flight control systems, heads-up display; airborne
weapons and reconnaissance systems; air traffic control systems, including
communications, display, and surveillance systems. Also included are ground
radar systems, early warning and missile/space tracking; electric-optic,
infrared and laser systems; space satellite communication systems; telemetry
systems and the space vehicle avionics. You will also be familiar with
government regulations associated with such equipment.

These
vocational courses are designed for two-year programs and may be transferred
to Bachelor of Vocational Education or other four-year programs. See the
Solano Community College Catalog for details on each course. It is important
to see a counselor regarding the catalog of record.
To achieve the
Associate in Science Degree Completion of 51 units, including 28
units in the major. Due to the advanced technical nature of the degree,
students must have the following prerequisites or equivalent experience:
Certificate of Achievement Completion of 28 unit major with a grade
of C (2.0) or better.
Powerplant Maintenance Technician
You can prepare for a career in the exciting field of aircraft repair as an
Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) in Powerplant maintenance by earning a
certificate of achievement or an associate in science degree at Solano
Community College. In addition, upon Administration (FAA) Certificate of
Authorization to test.
You will start the Powerplant curriculum with basic reciprocating and
turbine engine theory. You will then have powerplant construction, general
maintenance, overhaul, operation, and troubleshooting. You will also examine
operational theory, repair, servicing, inspection, and troubleshooting of
all Powerplant related systems: ignition, electrical, fuel, fuel metering,
lubrications and propellers.
The AMT General I and II courses will cover basic theories and laboratory
