Everyone here at the CTE
division would like to congratulate John McNitt who recently
graduated from the corrections portion of the Criminal Justice
Program here at Solano Community College. McNitt is now a state
correctional officer at Folsom Prison. |
You can prepare to enter any of several exciting and rewarding careers
within the corrections field: correctional officer, probation officer,
juvenile hall or prison counselor, or parole officer. The corrections
occupation is rapidly being professionalized and the higher standards are
reflected in the Corrections program at Solano Community College. All
instructors have experience in one or more of the correction fields. The
Corrections programs operates with the cooperation and participation of
nearby corrections agencies, and numerous Solano College corrections
students have been employed in the field or have served as professional
interns. Courses are scheduled both day and night to accommodate full-time
or part-time students seeking to acquire or upgrade skills in the
corrections field.
Your
education and training will help qualify you for many skilled and
professional positions in local, state and federal correctional agencies.
Experienced correctional personnel may be promoted to fill positions as
supervisors, administrators, and special project directors.
Your New
Skills
You will survey correctional aspects of
the criminal justice system from historical and contemporary perspective and
review career opportunities. You will examine criminal behavior in society,
and the many contributing factors relevant to deviant behavior. You will
become familiar with treatment modalities, including behavior modification,
reality therapy, and transactional analysis. You will participate in
role-playing exercises to test new skills in interviewing, counseling, and
group work. You will work closely with various community resources and gain
knowledge and experience in managing clients in community-based treatment
programs.
You will be exposed to institutional casework and prison operations, and
become familiar with the legal aspects of corrections. Students are eligible
to work as volunteers in a probation department, the courts, correctional
institutions, or other organizations, and to earn elective units toward your
A.S. Degree.
*Vocational work experience must be done in a law enforcement agency for law
enforcement majors, and in a correctional agency for corrections majors.
Only three units of CJ 91 can count toward the degree.

requirements and electives.

Law Enforcement
You can
prepare for a rewarding career in law enforcement in the Solano Criminal
Justice program. Established with the cooperation of the Solano County
Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, the program offers courses for both
pre-service and inservice students. All instructors have experience as law
enforcement officers. Courses are scheduled day or night to accommodate
full-time and part-time students seeking to acquire or upgrade skills in the
field.
Your education and training will help make you eligible to fill the large
and continuing demand for skilled and professional-oriented law enforcement
officers in local, state and federal agencies, and in private businesses.
Experienced officers may be promoted to fill positions as supervisors,
investigators, and administrators.
Your New Skills
You will survey law enforcement and criminal justice from historical and
contemporary perspectives and review career opportunities. You will examine
the structure of criminal law through a broad range of legal concepts and
legal research and by inspecting the most frequently used sections of
criminal codes. You will learn types of evidence used in criminal cases and
rules concerning admissibility of evidence in court. You will be shown the
fundamentals of investigation—collection, identification, and preservation
of evidence, used of scientific aids, techniques of interviewing witnesses
and techniques for the investigation of specific crimes. You will learn the
theory of techniques of beat patrol, accident investigation and traffic law
enforcement. You will learn the philosophy of juvenile treatment as well as
laws and procedures used in police work with juveniles. You will develop an
understanding of the philosophy of the use of restrained police control
methods, both in the martial arts and in the moral, legal and practical use
of firearms.

those who intend to become peace officers, enter law enforcement as
