Welcome to Digital Home Technology Integration!

"Get in on a growing marketplace - digital home technology installation!"

This program is designed to prepare the student for employment as a digital home technology integration (DHTI) specialist. DHTIs integrate such diverse technologies as computer networks, lighting control, home security, home entertainment, heating and air conditioning, video, data and voice systems to create the “smart home” of the future. This major provides the knowledge and skills required for employment as well as industry-based certification.

The science fiction vision of home automation with a robot in every home is now being replaced with a more practical concept of integrating electronic devices and personal computers to create a single, centrally controlled environment. Homeowners want to connect everyone and everything within the home. This new concept is referred to as integrated home network, and those who install home networks are called digital home technology integrators (DHTIs).

DHTI's learn to integrate such diverse technologies as computer networks, lighting control, home security, home entertainment, heating and air conditioning, video, data and voice systems. In the past, each of these systems was installed and maintained by a separate individual; electrician, cabling technician, security installer, low-voltage electrician, home entertainment installer, computer servicing technician. The move in industry now is to have a single, educated technician perform all of these tasks in a holistic manner during construction, retrofitting, or maintenance.

Opportunities exist throughout the greater San Francisco Bay area to the Sacramento Valley. Employers using DHTIs include alarm companies, home entertainment and computer retailers, cable and satellite television vendors, electricians, home maintenance companies, and home builders. A new group of companies that specialize specifically in home technology are also beginning to appear further demonstrating the predicted growth in the field. The preparation for industry based professional certification (DHTI+ through CompTIA) insures that workers have the credentials required by employers in the home technology industry. Workers are usually expected to provide services in the homes of customers and are expected to be able to interact with customers on a professional basis.
